Caregiving is demanding of your Time and to some degree, your Sanity. Yoga is a great way to kill two birds with one stone
1. Great way to meet new friends / so you don’t feel so isolated when caregiving
Increased Flexibility & Stress relief
Stress relief and Flexibility were the reason why I joined yoga. When you walk out of a class your feel as sense of calm and depending on what class I choose , sometimes it feels like you’re walking on a cloud , ha ha ha sound silly when I’m typing it out, but its true. 🙂
When I was practicing yoga, I started out with a very, very stiff back, I could not touch my toes ha ha ha ..but after a couple of weeks I was able to bend over and put my hands flat on the floor (without bending my knees) YUP true story!
Promotes Good Bone Health
It is safe for people with osteoporosis and helps slow the process down according to Dr. Lorean Fishman who wrote the book “Healing Yoga”
If you know you have osteoporosis in your family It will be great as a preventative approach. And one to two times a week is a great start to healthy bones

Clothes fit better
This is the part of Yoga I love , I have been known to have a few different sizes in my closet the “I’m liking the way these look on me” , “Oh my goodness its a long sweater day” style & “where are my sweatpants” !!!
Yoga folk are friendly
As a beginner , in any yoga class I have attended I have always had a warm welcoming. Either from the person beside me or from the great instructor who are very diligent at asking (or knowing) who is new to the class, they always ask who is doing yoga for the first time, so when the time comes, they show you some `modified`
Yoga People are not `clique` bunch, I know some companies portray a certain `type` that show up to these classes is just not true.
All shapes and sizes walk thru the studio doors, and to my surprise a lot of men participate too! And the great thing about yoga studios is their hours most are open up yearly in the morning and close very late so it can accommodate early morning people, late nighters and people who just like to sleep in every morning.
You DON’T need to look like a walking %$?-lemon ad…
NO NO NO this is furthest from the true. just as I said before the are not clique, not everyone dresses in `name brands` clothing.
Part of practising yoga is having a greater understanding of `self`, and letting go of `ego`. There is no room for being materialistic, you leave that $%?? at the door, and hopefully by the time your hour is over you will have forgotten to pick it up.
Just have to wear something `breathable`, that has a lot of stretch. it would be good to bring a towel of your own , and some studios offer mats to use, that is always great option to have to test run the class out to see if yoga is even for you! (btw most yoga studios , heck most gyms in general with offer you a free two week trial, or if you’re lucky a month.)
Great place to make new friends
A great way to meet new like-minded friends. If you are a little nervous of going the first time (as i always am lol ) ask a friend, who is in the same boat at you … the caregiver boat , whether it is caring for your parents or your children, when we open up and let others in, you will realise we are more alike than we are different. And that is a good thing to find out.
Let me know in the comments below what you thought of your first class, or what is stopping you from going to one.
